Double House
Double House introduces the challenge to create two similar "fraternal twin" houses on one randomly assigned lot. Using skills introduced throughout the semester, this final class project combines strategy, ambition, and the whimsical drive of a first-year architecture student.
The Challenge
The challenge of my site was it's small footprint, forcing extreme close-quarters of my proposed residential structures. I addressed this challenge through my use of circular towers, which conform to the semicircle shape of the site. The circular towers also force neutrality on the site, inviting the potential residents to consider more social interactions with one another and more common collaboration in regards to "upkeep."
Design Strategy
Considering the size of the site, I knew I needed my structures to build up instead of out. I decided on the idea of platforms spiraling a central staircase at incremental heights, allowing adequate height for in the space between each platform. This makes the buildings tall, but not skyscraper height. The platforms increasing incrementally create opportunities for windows to exist from a higher platform to a lower platform, allowing for connection throughout multiple rooms despite being at different levels.
