Architecture

At Ground Level

This school project contributed to the understanding of a programmatic agenda and site-specific constraints as a design tool for iteration.

The Project

Students were tasked with creating a proposal for a Summer pop-up library pavilion for the Boston Public Library. The pavilion was to house a small collection of physical and/or digital media and an additional public program of choice derived from digital (Google Street View) observations of the site.

My site plan, inspired by Denis Wood's book: Everything Sings: Maps for a Narrative Atlas, considers what is actually visible from the site. I determined it would be most beneficial to allow visitors of the pavilion to make their own observations in an open, circular setting. The objective of this pavilion is to encourage visitors to consider their surroundings from a new point of view they may not have considered before.

Attempting to integrate the pavilion into the site, my project dips down into the ground. Using a collection of water as a natural resource to frame the surrounding of the pavilion, it also allows for the viewpoint of the visitor to be framed as the water reflects its surroundings. Intended to be a mixed-use space of gathering, storytelling, and bonding.
